It is time for us to contribute to the prosperity of Indonesia’s marine industry through the use of technology.
Aruna, as an active player in the fisheries industry in Indonesia, is also working to advance and ensure the sustainability of marine and fisheries ecosystems through the initiation of providing APL (Alat Penanda Lokasi) innovation to the fishermen under its auspices.
In the midst of the increasing discovery and use of modern utilities, monitoring facilities are one of the things that can be implemented to ensure compliance of marine and fisheries activities with applicable regulations. Apart from that, APL (Alat Penanda Lokasi) will also have a good impact on fishermen. Hm, how is that possible?
To gain a deeper understanding of the use of APL technology and Aruna’s commitment to using APL for fishermen, let’s look at the explanation below!
Definition of APL
Alat Penanda Lokasi (APL) or Tracking Devices are tools for fishermen and fishing industry players to monitor fishermen’s catch areas, frequency of fishing activities and number of catches. With APL, fishermen’s compliance with fisheries regulations can be more closely observed and guaranteed, so that the marine ecosystem is also maintained. When the marine environment and fisheries actors can protect and monitor each other, it is hoped that the marine and fisheries industry in Indonesia will become more solid.
Who can use APL?
Talking about the fisheries industry, a good ecosystem needs to be supported by every actor in it. Of course, all parties involved in fisheries activities can take advantage of the features and benefits of APL implementation, from fishermen, researchers or marine research and observation bodies, to authorities in the sector. The more parties involved, the better the future of Indonesia’s seas will be.
Aruna’s real action in using APL
The innovation carried out by Aruna directly involved implementing the use of APL for Aruna Fishermen, so that on February 26 2022, Aruna carried out outreach and training related to APL to 10 beneficiary fishermen in Jenebora, East Kalimantan. The training lasted for 1 hour to explain the functions and benefits of APL. Apart from that, this activity also aims to increase fishermen’s compliance with anti-IUU fishing regulations.
In implementing APL (Alat Penanda Lokasi), of course assistance is needed for fishermen. Therefore, this activity will continue until February 28 2022 with the agenda of installing APLs on fishing boats. The installation was carried out by fishermen with assistance from the Maritime Foundation. Until now, all tools are active. Aruna and Global Fishing Watch also expressed their commitment through a collaboration that echoes their activities as active actors in the use of APL. Both of them also routinely monitor data acquisition and implementation of APL technology.
Indeed, it is time for the call for technology meets fisheries to begin to be believed and put into real practice, so that the ecosystem and… sustainable fisheries can always be awake. Through the use of APL, Aruna provides a concrete example regarding the use of this technology, so that all fisheries sectors can work together to form a good and sustainable marine and fisheries industry.
